deva-dvija-guru-prājña-pūjanam (worshipping the divinities, the twice-born, preceptors and the wise) śaucam (purity) ārjavam (simplicity) brahmacaryam (celibacy) ahiṁsā ca (and non-violence) śārīram tapaḥ (bodily austerity) ucyate (it is called).

devā ca dvijā ca guravaś ca prājñāś ca deva-dvija-guru-prājñās teṣāṃ pūjanaṃ deva-dvija-guru-prājña-pūjanam | śaucam | ārjavam ṛjutvam | brahmacaryam ahiṃsā ca śarīra-nirvartyaṃ śārīraṃ śarīra-pradhānaiḥ sarvair eva kārya-karaṇaiḥ kartrādibhiḥ sādhyaṃ śārīraṃ tapa ucyate | pañcaite tasya hetavaḥ [gītā 18.15] iti hi vakṣyati

atha tapaso guṇatas traividhyaṃ vaktuṃ tasya śarīravāṅmanoniṣpādyatayā svarūpabhedaṃ tāvad āha
